| Racism has now been declared a public health crisis in more than 50 cities and the with the recent protests against police brutality and racial injustice, every industry is currently showing their support for Black Lives Matter. This current movement has similar beginnings of the Climate Change movement and the fight for environmental justice. Sustainability includes principles of social equity, but the movement for racial justice has not yet reached that same peak. The environmental / sustainability movement has been amplified by grand actions such as UN resolutions, Paris accords, LEED certification, the Architecture 2030 challenge, and more tools to support architects in their efforts for climate action. The movement for racial justice has not yet been amplified to this level within the architecture profession. The NAACP SEED program, LEED for Diversity, and other strategies are still in their infancy stage, but can continue to develop to bring more metrics to the to bear to show actionable results. This seminar will examine the foundational policies and strategies of the sustainability movement as compared to the racial justice movement, specifically as they apply to the architecture profession, and identify needed actions that can be developed to elevate racial justice and equity to the same plane as sustainability. As a profession, if we can respond to racial inequality as a crisis in the same way that we have responded to the climate crisis, we can make sure that racial equity can become a core value of architecture and our built environment. |
