The field of architecture thrives on the dynamic exchange of ideas and diverse experiences. An architect’s viewpoint is shaped by their global perspective, design training, and cultural heritage. As NOMA continues to expand its reach, our network now spans continents, advancing our mission to connect, advocate, and elevate design excellence within communities of color. In this spirit of global collaboration, we are excited to welcome three groundbreaking West African practitioners who are redefining architecture across borders. They will share their insights on the shared experiences of designers from the global majority, the future of African design, and the potential for cross-continental connections. These leaders, through their roles as educators, researchers, advocates, artists, and architects, have elevated the profile of Black female architects on the international stage. Their diverse, multidisciplinary approaches reflect a unique diasporic aesthetic that enriches their design practices. -

2024 NOMA Conference Session
Baltimore's celebrated artist and modern griot, Derrick Adams. Renowned for his mastery in weaving narrative through art, Adams transcends traditional boundaries to create vibrant dialogues around identity, culture, and community. Adams will share his visionary approach to art as a form of storytelling, blending painting, sculpture, and performance to craft powerful narratives that bridge cultural and geographical divides. As a contemporary griot, Adams uses his work to articulate and preserve the richness of collective experiences, offering new perspectives on how design and art can foster global understanding and connection. Adams’ innovative narratives challenge conventions and illuminate the intersections of personal heritage and universal themes. Highlighting the work of his Baltimore-based nonprofit- Charm city Cultural Cultivation- Adams discuss the preservation of legacies and how designers can create spaces that foster community. His unique approach to the art of storytelling through a modern lens provides gain insights into how narrative-driven design can inspire and transform our world.
